PersonalityHighly intelligent, emotionally complex, and deeply bonded to their owners. Macaws are playful, mischievous, and incredibly affectionate once they trust you. They are also strong-willed and need firm, loving guidance.
Noise LevelLoud. Macaws have powerful voices that can be heard from far away. They are best suited for homes where noise is not a concern for neighbors.
SizeLarge to very large (20–40 inches from head to tail). They need the biggest cage you can provide, plus a play stand and lots of out-of-cage time.
Lifespan50–80+ years. Many macaws outlive their owners. You should have a plan for who will care for your macaw if something happens to you.
DietHigh-quality pellets, plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, and healthy nuts like almonds, walnuts, and macadamias. Macaws need more fat in their diet than smaller parrots.
Best ForExperienced bird owners with large homes, dedicated time, and a deep understanding of parrot behavior. Macaws are not beginner birds.
